Cover Of Q Magazine

The Colours used in the cover of Q are gold, red black and white which gives it a regal and expensive feel. The layout is interesting as the picture on the front is cut by a gold banner with writing on. It allows the readers to feel like there reading something expensive and special. There are also banners on the top and bottom to pack in more information and make it look bigger than it is.

The picture of the arctic monkeys is in black and white adding to the timeless classy look, its layered behind the banner to create depth. However the red Q top left has remained un-touched to keep it looking familiar and recognizable, this red is echoed in some of the moat important parts of the text to make it easy for the reader to find the most important parts to get information easily.

The fonts used are a mixture of serif and non serif, this mixture allows the text that is most important is put in serif to draw the eye to the top and bottom making you read the whole thing.

Contents Page Of Mojo

The Contents page of mojo has a simple layout with the features on the right and a picture on the left.

Its all set on a grey background with black as the main colour for the writing which make it bold and easy to read for the reader, but a yellowish green is used to differentiate between features and what there about, making it easy to interpret. The main title echos the title on the front for continuity so the reader feels at home on the contents.

The picture on the left adds colour and breaks up the page, the title layers behind the picture, to create a sense of depth too.

Front Cover Of Mojo

I will be analysing December 09's cover of MOJO magazine.

Only a few colours are used, these are red, grey, black and white, White being the colour of the writing used, with red to pick out the main features of the magazine, The title is black and set into the background to make the cover look deep and rich in colour, whilst the main background is white to contrast against the black of the T-shirt worn by Woody Guthrie. This limited use of colours is tailored to the reader as it makes the cover look classy and more grown up than other music magazine which can look iratic and childish. This more adult style appeals to mojo's older demographic who read for the music.

The font used is a non-serif bold font which allows the reader to concentrate more on the subject matter than the font, its easy to read however retains a sense of formality.

The picture of Woody Guthrie on the cover is a mid to close shot, it covers the majority of the cover and his clothes reflect the colours in the writing and title.

The cover also addears to the grid rule. All the features and extra little pictures fit into a grid layout, making the information easier to read for the reader, and allowing it to look ordered.

Demographic Analysis

The image below is a table created by www.NRS.com who have made the table as a record of the people who read all UK magazines. Firstly the table shows us how many people read a cetain magazine and then how old the reader is, their socio economic group and gender.

I will be basing my research on Q and Mojo magazine. After reading the table i have seen which group of people im going to be aiming my magazine at. They will be;

-Between 15-45
- In the socio economic group between ABC1
-Male

This is because out of 666,000 readers of Q magazine

- 444,000 are in the socio economic group ABC1
-572,000 are between the ages of 15-45
- 513,000 are males.

As for Mojo who has 286,000 readers

- 212,000 are in the socio economic group ABC1
-217,000 are between the ages of 15-45
-227,000 are male.

On the Bauer publishing website, publishers of Q, define there target audience by;

"Open minded experience seekers, the Q audience don’t define themselves by the music they listen to. Music is an important passion, but their love of music will never be to the detriment of their other passions, such as film, sport and comedy"

Also with bauer are Mojo, who's audience profile is;

"Discerning and passionate music aficionados, the MOJO audience is predominately male (72%) and affluent (36% AB). These heavy consumers of music see their passion as discovery without boundaries, genre and decade being secondary to quality."
